Our Bilingual Youth Leadership Program is designed to develop young leaders by fostering independence, cooperation, collaboration, and problem-solving in both English and French.
Each day, students will divide their time between two key components: a structured classroom session and hands-on application. The classroom portion focuses on instruction, lessons, self-reflection, goal setting, and discussions. The second part of the day is dedicated to practical experience, where students work alongside our younger learners in the classroom. In this role, they serve as mentors and role models while supporting the teacher, developing collaboration skills, and contributing to a positive and inclusive learning environment. This opportunity helps students build confidence in themselves and their abilities.Through these interactive activities, real-world challenges, and personalized feedback, our leadership students gain essential leadership skills that are both transferable and applicable to their personal growth and community development.
Our leadership students will work with a variety of age groups, practice specific leadership and team skills, and create opportunities that work with their personal gifts to add to their community projects that enhance life planning and readiness. The program’s bilingual nature ensures they can effectively communicate and lead in diverse environments, broadening their perspectives and increasing their adaptability. Whether through teamwork, critical thinking, each participant will leave with a stronger sense of purpose and the tools needed to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
Students who participate in this week’s program and complete it successfully, are eligible to return as volunteer students throughout the summer and obtain their 40-Hour Volunteer Service. We have had many students over the years use their experiences at Les Petites Pommes towards their 40 hours of community involvement and we are happy to fill out the necessary paperwork towards this.

Who is this program for?
This program is for youth aged 13-17 (entering into grade 9-12 in the coming school year) who are eager to develop leadership skills while improving their bilingual communication in English and French. It is ideal for individuals looking to build confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities in a supportive environment.
Do I need to be fluent in both English and French?
No, participants of all language levels are welcome. The program is designed to support language development, opportunities to practice language opportunities, all while focusing on leadership growth.
What kind of activities will I participate in?
Activities include physical activity (keeping those young minds and bodies healthy!), especially in the outdoors. Leadership and personal development activities are at the core of the program and then youth are given opportunities to work on specific skills in teaching environments that allow them to make the ideas of leadership and teamwork real.
Will my youth receive feedback on my progress? How can I see it too?
Youth in the program receive daily feedback on their experiences, both individually and as a group to support their ongoing growth. Participants will be keeping track of their learning in their personal folders which will go home upon completion of the program. There will also be a daily board where you can review the topics and activities that the group has been involved with – we encourage you to take a picture of the board to share at home and use this as a prompt for discussion with your children each evening.
How will this program help me in the future?
We understand that every child is unique, and we have years of experience helping shy children feel comfortable and included in our camp environment. Our caring staff takes the time to get to know each camper, providing gentle encouragement and creating opportunities for them to participate in ways that feel safe and natural for them.
The skills gained in this program—such as collaboration, resilience, and critical thinking—are transferable to academic, professional, and community settings, helping participants prepare for future opportunities. As well, this provides the foundations that set youth up for success in volunteering and employment experiences. Completion of this program is a requirement prior to volunteering in our programs.
How do I apply?

Can youth volunteer?
This program also sets youth up with the skills needed to semi-independently provide the support that effective volunteers need. We are happy to have participants from the leadership program return to volunteer with us – please coordinate with our Director! (We also happily provided support with paperwork needed by youth who have volunteered with us to complete their Secondary School diploma)
French Camps FAQ
What level of French do students usually have?
The majority of our students come from a French immersion background, followed by core, private and then homeschool. Students are broken into 3 age categories: 5-6, 7-9 and 10-13. In our youngest age group of ages 5-6, many children have not yet started French immersion or are still considering it while some have had 1 year of experience. In our older age groups, there are mostly French immersion students. However, we do often have enthusiastic core, private and homeschool students and this is awesome too!
Do you speak French 100% of the time?
No, we do not speak French 100% of the time. At Les Petites Pommes, whether it is during our in-person or online programming, we have chosen to use a bilingual approach to language learning. This means that while we will speak French the majority of the time (and our teachers are fluent in both French and English), we will use English to support the teaching of new concepts and not penalize children for not being able to communicate 100% in French. We find that this creates an inclusive, accessible and supportive environment for language learning as students are not constantly called out for being at different levels of their development and language learning journey. We can quickly identify student levels and if we notice that they are not communicating in French to their potential, we will encourage and motivate them positively to try again en français.
How do you manage multiple skill levels?
Our bilingual approach is one of the key ways we manage and address multiple levels in one classroom in terms of ensuring understanding, participation and a positive learning experience for our campers. Another way we manage this is by specifically creating activities that have different tiers and paths towards completion. For example, a writing activity which may ask about what a child’s favourite part of the day was maybe completed with a single sentence, varying lengths of a paragraph, or simply a picture, depending on age and ability. This allows students to work at their own levels and not compare themselves to each other. When students are not constrained by expectations or fearful that their work is not good enough, they simply start to take joy and pride in their accomplishments and improvement naturally occurs. This is the opportunity that summer camp provides us and what makes our program a place for students to flourish so that they keep coming back every year. You would be surprised how often we hear, “At first my child didn’t want to go to French camp, but now it is their favourite camp!”
Can my child attend as an absolute beginner in French?
Yes! Many of our students have not started French immersion yet. It is our honour to be your child’s first experience with hearing and learning French and our main goal is to leave them feeling excited, confident and motivated to start at school.
If my child is very shy, how will you support them?
We understand that every child is unique, and we have years of experience helping shy children feel comfortable and included in our camp environment. Our caring staff takes the time to get to know each camper, providing gentle encouragement and creating opportunities for them to participate in ways that feel safe and natural for them.
We also work closely with families to develop personalized strategies tailored to your child’s needs, ensuring they have a positive and enriching camp experience. If you have specific concerns or ideas, we’re happy to collaborate with you to find the best approach.
