This month I have the pleasure of implementing a special French intensive month as a guest teacher at Rosseau Lake College located in beautiful Rosseau, Ontario, nestled in the heart of Muskoka. This is the second year we have partnered with their school for this project 🙂
Rosseau Lake College (RLC) is an outdoor education-focused day and boarding school with a diverse group of students from both local and international backgrounds. During one of our staff meetings last week, the topic of ChatGPT came up and we discussed what it means for our classrooms.

As an educator, my approach has always been to embrace new tools by engaging students in a conversation about their potential and teaching them how to leverage them effectively. Similar to the impact Google Translate had, ChatGPT will transform the way students approach their French homework.
Much like Google Translate, ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can assist students. As educators, it is essential for us to empower our students with the skills to use it properly, emphasizing its role as a tool rather than a sole dependency.
To illustrate how ChatGPT can benefit students, I asked ChatGPT directly: “How can students leverage ChatGPT to enhance their French homework and language learning?” This was the response:
- Practice writing skills by engaging in written conversations with ChatGPT in French.
- Obtain instant translations of unfamiliar words or phrases for better comprehension.
- Seek guidance on French grammar rules and sentence structures to improve accuracy.
- Explore cultural aspects of the French language, such as idiomatic expressions and traditions.
- Receive recommendations for additional resources like textbooks, online materials, and authentic French content.
Furthermore, ChatGPT expressed an important sentiment that resonated with me: “While ChatGPT can provide assistance with French homework, it is crucial for students to actively engage in their learning, seek guidance from teachers or native speakers, and consult reputable language resources. ChatGPT should be used as a supportive tool to supplement their studies and foster a more interactive and immersive French learning experience.”
I couldn’t agree more with this statement. It reminds us all that while ChatGPT can be a valuable resource, it is no substitute for the active engagement and guidance offered by teachers, native speakers, and reliable language resources.
Happy language learning mes amis!
